Juul Labs has reached a $40 million settlement with North Carolina over its role in promoting vaping to youths. This marks the first time a state has settled with the embattled brand.

The settlement, which was announced Monday by North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, claims that Juul aggressively marketed its e-cigarettes to youths with “sleek devices and sweet flavors,” fueling a wave of teen vaping addiction that reversed a “historic decline” in teen nicotine use, Raleigh News & Observer reported.

The U.S. District Court For The Western District of Pennsylvania has rejected the amended complaint of Susan and Carl Antonucci in an ongoing lawsuit regarding Boston Scientific’s pelvic mesh products. Fifteen states have chosen to accept Purdue Pharmaceuticals and their associates’ $4.5 billion settlement offer. In addition to the settlement money, Purdue will also release corporate documents, sign over charity funds for opioid abatement and an additional $50 million from the family itself.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear a final appeal from Johnson & Johnson, allowing a $2.1 billion baby powder cancer verdict against the company to stand, NBC News and other outlets reported.

A federal jury has awarded $7.1 million to three army veterans who alleged that defective 3M military earplugs caused their permanent hearing damage.

Friday’s verdict bodes poorly for 3M, which now faces up to 240,000 similar claims from service members, veterans and some civilians in what’s now the largest mass tort in U.S. history. Nearly 70 lawsuits have been filed against global agricultural giant Syngenta and other manufacturers of the toxic chemical herbicide paraquat, including a record six lawsuits filed in one day earlier this month.
